The Recoleta Cemetery is one of my favorite spots in Buenos Aires. It was originally established by the Monks of The Order of the Recoletos who arrived in the early 18th century. The cemetery was built around their Church called Our Lady of Pilar (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar) in 1773. The Order later disbanded in 1822 and became the first public cemetery in November of that same year. There are many famous politicians, presidents, generals and artist laid to rest within the walls of this beautiful antique cemetery.
